Golden Girl Amalie Targets International Success this summer

Local swimmer, Amalie Smith is embarking on a summer of competition on the International stage, representing Team GB at the European Junior and European Championships, and Team England at the Commonwealth Games.

16-year-old Amalie, who trains with RTW Monson and attends Weald of Kent Grammar School in Tonbridge, was selected following a stand-out performance at the British Championships in April, which was held at the London Aquatic Centre.

This week she has flown to Munich to compete in the 400m individual medley event at the European Junior Championships, alongside RTW Monson’s Aran Bissett, 18, who will compete in the 50m freestyle, 50m breaststroke and 100m freestyle events, and 16-year-old Imogen Myles, who is representing Team GB in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke events.

From there. Amalie will travel to Glasgow to compete in the Commonwealth Games, as part of a team which includes English swimming stars Tom Dean, James Guy and Olympic medallist Adam Ramsay-Peaty, before rounding off a super summer at the European Swimming Championships in Paris at the end of this month.

Amalie currently holds the British Age Record for the 400m Individual Medley at 4.35.46, which cements her as the fourth fastest British woman of all time in this event. Last year she was named as Talent Athlete of the Year at the Swim England National Awards and continues to be one of Britain’s rising stars. Last year she won two gold medals in the 200m and 400m individual medleys at the European Junior Swimming Championships in Slovakia.

After starting competitive swimming at the age of nine, Amalie has continued to build on her success, counting her current career highlight as the World Junior Championships in Romania last year, where she won silver in both the 200m and 400m individual medley.

She has trained with RTW Monson since 2023, under the guidance of head coach Karen Bradbury, who has also been selected as part of the coaching team for Team England at the Commonwealth Games. Amalie says, “It’s been really good to be around so many other swimmers who want to achieve at a high level. Karen has helped me achieve so much in the last couple of years.”

As her swimming career continues to build momentum, Amalie insists she is taking her targets one step at a time. “I’m focused on this summer at the moment, so will see how things look after the summer.”
